Heartburn feels like a burning sensation behind the breastbone that often rises toward the throat, typically after eating or when lying down. Many people also notice a sour or acidic taste, throat irritation, or a chronic cough from stomach acid backing up.
What Heartburn Feels Like
Heartburn is the sensation caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus (acid reflux). The classic symptoms are:
- A burning feeling behind the breastbone — a hot, burning discomfort in the center of the chest that often rises toward the throat.
- A sour or acidic taste — bitter stomach acid backing up into the throat or mouth, known as regurgitation.
- Worse after eating or lying down — symptoms that flare after large or fatty meals, or when bending over or lying flat.
- Throat irritation — hoarseness, a lump-like feeling, or a sore throat from acid exposure.
- Nighttime symptoms — reflux that disrupts sleep and can trigger a chronic cough or wheezing.
What These Symptoms Mean
Heartburn happens when the valve between the stomach and esophagus relaxes and allows acid upward. The esophagus is not built to handle acid, so the lining becomes irritated, producing that burning feeling. Because eating fills the stomach and lying down removes gravity’s help, symptoms predictably worsen after meals and at night.
Occasional symptoms after a rich meal are common. Symptoms that occur twice a week or more may indicate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is worth discussing with a doctor to protect the esophagus over time.
Which Symptoms Are Dangerous
Some “heartburn” symptoms are actually warning signs of something more serious and should not be dismissed:
- Chest pain with shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea, or pain that spreads to the arm, jaw, or back — these suggest a heart attack, not reflux, and warrant 911.
- Difficulty or pain swallowing, or food that feels stuck — can signal a narrowed or inflamed esophagus.
- Vomiting blood, coffee-ground material, or black, tarry stools — signs of bleeding in the digestive tract.
- Unexplained weight loss alongside reflux symptoms.
These symptoms move a case out of the “ordinary heartburn” category and into one that needs evaluation.
