Is a CT Scan an Emergency?

A CT scan is an imaging test, not a disease, so the test is never the emergency by itself. What matters is why it is being ordered. Some symptoms need a CT within minutes to guide life-saving treatment, while others can wait for a scheduled outpatient scan. The difference comes down to specific red flags.

Red Flags That Require an Emergency CT

Come to the ER without delay if you have any of the following, because each can hide bleeding, a clot, or an injury that only a CT can confirm quickly:

• Stroke warning signs — sudden facial drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech, sudden confusion, or sudden vision loss. An urgent head CT tells doctors whether the stroke is caused by a clot or by bleeding, which changes treatment completely.
• Serious head injury — a hard blow to the head followed by loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, worsening confusion, a seizure, or clear fluid draining from the nose or ears.
• Severe, sudden, or worsening abdominal pain — which can signal appendicitis, a kidney stone, or a blocked or ruptured organ.
• Major chest or torso trauma — from a car crash, hard fall, or blunt blow that could cause internal bleeding or organ damage.
• The worst headache of your life — a sudden thunderclap headache can indicate bleeding around the brain.

Call 911 Immediately For

Do not drive yourself if you have signs of a stroke, a severe head injury with loss of consciousness, or major trauma. Call 911 so treatment can begin en route. For a possible poisoning, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

When a CT Is Not an Emergency

Routine, screening, or follow-up CT scans — surveillance of a known condition, or imaging for mild, stable, long-standing symptoms — are scheduled through your doctor or an outpatient imaging center, not the ER.
