What are the symptoms of x-ray?
There are no symptoms of an X-ray itself. Instead, certain symptoms point to when you may need one, such as pain, swelling, or deformity after an injury, a persistent cough with fever or shortness of breath, or ongoing belly pain.
An X-ray is a test, not an illness, so it has no symptoms of its own. The useful question is which symptoms suggest you would benefit from one. X-rays see bone best and can also reveal problems in the chest and abdomen, so the symptom picture usually falls into a few groups.
Symptoms That Suggest a Possible Broken Bone
After a fall, twist, or direct blow, watch for:
- Pain that is sharp and worsens when you move, press on, or put weight on the area
- Swelling and bruising that develop quickly around the site
- A visible deformity, bump, or a limb that looks bent or out of place
- Inability to bear weight, grip, or use the limb normally
- Tenderness directly over a bone rather than the surrounding muscle
A joint that is swollen, unstable, or “gives way” after trauma can also point to a fracture or dislocation.
Chest Symptoms an X-ray Can Explain
A chest X-ray is often used when someone has a cough with fever, chest pain, or shortness of breath, which can indicate pneumonia, fluid around the lungs, or a collapsed lung. Coughing up blood or breathlessness that comes on suddenly is more concerning and needs prompt evaluation.
Abdominal and Swallowed-Object Symptoms
Persistent belly pain, bloating, severe constipation, or repeated vomiting can prompt an abdominal X-ray to look for a bowel obstruction. An X-ray is also the quickest way to locate a swallowed coin, battery, bone, or an object embedded in tissue.
Which Symptoms Are Dangerous
Most of these symptoms mean “get imaged soon,” but some mean “get imaged now.” Bone pushing through the skin, a limb that is numb, cold, or has no pulse, severe trouble breathing, coughing up blood, a rigid or severely painful belly, or a swallowed button battery are warning signs that need emergency care rather than a routine appointment.
