After a fall, the decision depends on symptoms, head impact and whether the person can move safely. Head and hip injuries may not be obvious at first. This guide explains warning signs and what an emergency evaluation can involve.
No appointment or physician referral needed. Board-certified emergency physicians on site 24 hours a day.

Head impact deserves prompt medical evaluation in an older adult, particularly if they take blood thinners. Do not assume the person is uninjured because there is no visible wound. Tell the clinician about the head impact and the medicines they take.
Call 911 or seek emergency care for a headache that worsens, repeated vomiting, unusual behavior, new confusion or weakness, seizures, loss of consciousness, or difficulty waking. Head injury symptoms can appear later; a change after the fall still matters.
Hip or groin pain, difficulty putting weight on a leg, or a leg that appears shortened or turned can be signs of a hip fracture. If the person cannot get up or travel safely, call 911. Do not try to make them walk or move someone with a suspected serious injury.
For an in-person evaluation, bring the medication list if you can do so without delaying care. Describe how the fall happened, whether the head was hit and any changes afterward. A physician examines the injury and selects testing for the symptoms and findings; an X-ray or CT is not automatically needed after every fall.
Bellaire ER provides emergency physician evaluation with on-site CT, X-ray and laboratory testing. Treatment and stabilization depend on the findings. Injuries needing surgery or inpatient care require hospital resources; our team arranges transfer when that level of care is needed.
If there is no urgent injury, arrange follow-up with the person’s usual clinician to review balance, medicines and fall prevention. A fall is worth discussing even when emergency care is not needed.
