Call 911 Immediately
These red flags mean the airway may be closing and cannot wait:
- Trouble breathing or a feeling that your throat is closing
- Noisy, high-pitched breathing (stridor): a harsh sound when you breathe in
- Drooling or an inability to swallow your own saliva
- A muffled, “hot potato” voice with severe, often one-sided throat pain and swelling
- Severe swelling of the tongue, lips, or throat, especially with hives, possible anaphylaxis (call 911)
Trouble breathing or swallowing can signal dangerous swelling of the airway from a deep throat infection such as an abscess or epiglottitis. These conditions can worsen within minutes.
An Emergency Even Without Breathing Trouble
Some ENT situations warrant an ER visit even when breathing is fine:
- A nosebleed that will not stop after 20 minutes of firm, continuous pressure: or heavy bleeding, bleeding after a significant injury, or a nosebleed while taking blood thinners
- Sudden hearing loss, which can be a medical emergency where quick treatment improves the chance of recovery
- Severe ear pain with swelling or redness behind the ear, which may point to a spreading infection
- A high fever with a stiff neck
- A facial injury affecting the nose, jaw, or ear
When It Is Not an Emergency
A typical sore throat, mild earache, sinus pressure, seasonal allergy symptoms, mild hoarseness, or a plugged-ear feeling from a cold do not need emergency care.
