How much does an ER visit cost without insurance?
There is no single price. An emergency visit is billed for what it actually takes: the facility charge, the physician's charge, and any labs, imaging, medication or procedures. Only Bellaire ER's billing team can quote our charges, and only your plan can tell you what it will pay. Call (713) 660-0001 and ask for billing, and never delay emergency care to sort out payment first.

Unsure if Your Condition Requires Emergency Care?
Call our clinical triage desk at (713) 660-0001. An on-duty board-certified emergency physician will evaluate your symptoms before you drive in.
Care first, billing second
Emergency care is not something to price-shop mid-symptom. Texas uses the prudent layperson standard, which judges emergency coverage on your symptoms as a reasonable person would perceive them, not on what the workup eventually shows. Do not delay care for a true emergency while you try to work out what it will cost.
What actually goes on the bill
An ER visit is not one price, because it is not one service. A typical bill is assembled from:
- A facility charge, leveled by how much evaluation and monitoring the visit required. A laceration that needs cleaning and closure and a chest pain workup with serial testing are not the same level.
- A physician charge, billed separately by the emergency physician who treats you.
- Diagnostics: laboratory panels, X-ray, ultrasound, CT, only the ones your physician orders for your presentation.
- Procedures and medication given during the visit: sutures, splinting, IV fluids, breathing treatments, reductions, wound care.
This is why the honest answer to “what does a visit cost” is a range that depends on what your symptoms turn out to need, and why anyone who quotes you a single flat number before seeing you is guessing. For our charges, call (713) 660-0001 and ask for billing.
If you do have insurance
Bellaire ER is a licensed freestanding emergency room and, per our posted facility notice, an accepting most major insurance, though some plans may consider us out-of-network. We will not tell you we are in network with a particular carrier, because it would not be true. What is true:
- The Texas Department of Insurance requires insurers to pay for emergency care regardless of whether the facility is in their network.
- For emergency services, the federal No Surprises Act limits your cost sharing to in-network amounts and prohibits balance billing. It applies to independent freestanding emergency departments, which is what Bellaire ER is.
- Your deductible, copay and coinsurance still apply. Being protected from surprise billing is not the same as owing nothing.
- Only your plan can tell you how a specific claim will be processed. The member services number on your insurance card is the reliable source for that.
If you do not have insurance
Self-pay patients follow a different path, with separate protections including good-faith estimates. Call (713) 660-0001 and ask about self-pay options before you assume an emergency visit is out of reach.
Two things worth knowing in advance:
- A bill is a starting point, not a verdict. Ask billing what self-pay options exist, and ask about a payment arrangement rather than letting a balance go unanswered.
- Keep the discharge paperwork and the itemised statement. If a charge is not clear, ask for it to be explained line by line.
Cost is not a reason to sit on these symptoms
Waiting out a heart attack, a stroke, sepsis, a serious bleed or appendicitis costs far more than being evaluated: in treatment, in recovery, and in what the delay does to the outcome. Come in now, holiday or not, for chest pain or pressure, stroke signs, trouble breathing, bleeding that will not stop, severe abdominal pain, a fever of 100.4°F or higher in a baby under 3 months, or confusion and lethargy that is not like the person you know. Call 911 rather than driving if someone is unresponsive, seizing, struggling to breathe, or showing stroke signs.
