ER vs Urgent Care

What is the difference between an ER and urgent care?

Reviewed by Bellaire ER Medical Team, Board-Certified Emergency PhysiciansUpdated July 4, 2026

An ER handles life-threatening emergencies with full diagnostic capabilities (CT, X-ray, lab) and board-certified emergency physicians. Urgent care treats non-life-threatening issues like minor cuts, colds, and sprains during limited hours.

Emergency Room vs Urgent Care

The key difference is the level of care available:

Emergency Room (ER):

  • Open 24/7/365
  • Board-certified emergency medicine physicians
  • Full diagnostic imaging (CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound)
  • On-site laboratory
  • Can handle life-threatening conditions
  • Treats all ages including infants

Urgent Care:

  • Limited hours (typically 8am-8pm)
  • May not have emergency-trained physicians
  • Limited imaging capabilities
  • Cannot handle critical or life-threatening conditions
  • May refer you to an ER for serious issues

When to Choose the ER

Choose the ER when symptoms are severe, sudden, or potentially life-threatening. This includes chest pain, difficulty breathing, head injuries, high fevers in infants, severe allergic reactions, and uncontrolled bleeding.
