Which COVID-19 test do you need?

  • Rapid antigen test — results in about 15 minutes. Detects viral proteins from a nasal swab. Best when you have symptoms and need a fast answer. It is less sensitive than PCR, so a negative result does not fully rule out infection — repeat testing or a PCR test may be recommended if symptoms continue.
  • PCR test — results in 24 to 48 hours. Detects the virus’s genetic material and is the most sensitive test available, able to pick up infection even at low viral levels.   • Antibody (blood) test. Shows evidence of a past infection. It is not used to diagnose a current infection.

When should you get tested?

  • You had close contact with someone who tested positive.
