A lot of the modern companies have taken precautionary measures to protect their employees from injuries while working. This however, does not mean that accidents at these working places are unheard of. No! However careful you are working, you are likely to suffer from an injury of some sort at one point in your life. Even with all the safe working practices that are recommended by many, there is still the risk of getting injured while at your workplace. To many, injuries at the work place come as a surprise because they are not common. This leaves them wondering of their next step. What should you one do when they are injured at the work place? Should you report immediately to the authorities or seek medical help? Well, we talked to an expert from Bellaire and here is what he had to say on the first thing to do when you get injured at the workplace.
First aid or emergency medical care should come first
The first thing that you should think about when you are injured at the workplace, should be getting immediate medical help. Depending on the nature of the injury, you can get first aid at the place of work or call in to the nearest emergency room to get specialized treatment. First aid should be administered to lacerations, any cuts or wounds to control the bleeding while you await the ambulance or medical personnel to arrive at the scene.
Once you are in the safe hands of the doctors and you condition has been stabilized, you can then start thinking about the compensation protocols. Most of the time, people start thinking about the compensation and legal procedures to be followed for them to get the required compensations. The first thing on your mind as soon as the injury happens is how you should get to the nearest emergency room for comprehensive treatment.
Some people get injured and opt to keep quiet because they think they are doing the company favours. In real sense, these individuals are putting themselves at risk because some injuries might look insignificant at first but after some time they get serious. Take the case of people who work in go-downs carrying and arranging heavy equipment. If someone lifts something that is too heavier, he/she might injure his/her back unknowingly but instead of reporting the same to the emergency room for urgent medical care, the choose to remain quiet and work with the pain. The pain might not be that much at first but with time, it will escalate and become too much. Besides the pain, working with an injured back is risky and you can potentially get paralysis and other complicated disorders. Prioritize medical care and think about the other procedures later.
Remember that the cost of necessary medical services is paid by your employer or your employer’s insurance carrier, if the case is not disputed. Health care providers may request that injured workers sign form A-9. This form is meant to provide notice to the injured worker that he or she may be responsible to pay the medical bills if the Workers’ Compensation Board disallows the claim or the injured worker does not pursue the claim. This means that you should not be scared of getting the right treatment from the right facility. The cost of services should not bother you at all.
Make sure that you notify your supervisor about the injury and the way in which it occurred, as soon as possible. An injured employee who fails to inform his or her employer, in writing, within 30 days after the date of the accident causing the injury, may lose the right to workers’ compensation benefits. In the case of occupational disease, notification should be given within two years after disablement, or within two years after the claimant knew or should have known that the disease was work-related, whichever is later. If you can’t reach the supervisor immediately let your peers and workmates deliver the message to him/her and let them know of the best steps to take.
While all the paperwork is being processed, please make sure that you follow your doctor’s instructions to the letter to speed up your recovery. Very many people try too hard to get back to work quickly to impress their employers even before they have fully recovered. There is no shame in staying home because of an injury you picked up at the work place and every sensible employer will agree with me. They actually are happier if you stay home until you have fully recovered than trying to come back earlier and risk aggravating the injury. There should be no rush at all. Only come back to the work after you have had a go ahead from your doctor and you personally feel that the injury has healed property.
